A door that is wrong for its property — in profile, proportion or material — is immediately visible. AMB Joinery designs, manufactures and installs bespoke timber doors for London properties: period terraces, Victorian conversions, Georgian townhouses and contemporary homes. Every door is made to measure in our Uxbridge workshop, specified around your opening dimensions, architectural context and performance requirements.
We do not supply uPVC or composite doors. If timber is not right for your project, we will tell you — but for most London period homes, it almost certainly is.
A bespoke front door is one of the most visible elements of a London property. We design and build front doors in a range of panel configurations, from classic four-panel Victorian designs to flush and contemporary profiles. Options include:
- Solid timber with side or overhead glazing panels
- Part-glazed designs with leaded, clear or decorative glass
- Period-correct moulding profiles and raised panels
- Mortice deadlock and multi-point locking systems to BS 3621
For period homes, we work from the original door design or from architectural drawings to replicate the correct style. Where a property is in a conservation area or is a listed building, we can produce detailed drawings and a design statement to support any required consent.
Timber bi-fold doors suit wider openings where a full view of the garden is the priority. We manufacture two- to four-leaf configurations with engineered timber sections that remain stable through seasonal movement. Our bi-fold installations include concealed floor tracks, top-hung variants where floor fixings are not possible, and threshold options for flat access into the garden.
Internal door replacements are often prompted by renovation programmes where period character is being restored across a property. We manufacture:
- Two, four and six-panel raised and fielded designs
- Ledge-and-brace and cottage-style doors for period properties
- Glazed internal doors (clear, reeded or Georgian bar designs)
- Pocket and sliding door configurations where space is limited
Consistent profile and panel proportion across all internal doors is something we pay careful attention to — particularly important when replacing doors floor by floor in a Victorian or Edwardian terrace.
Back doors, side gates and utility access doors require weatherproofing and structural reliability above all else. We specify external doors in timber that will perform in exposed conditions: correct weather stripping, durable hardware and a paint system designed for external use.

Our recommended specification for front doors and any external door in an exposed location. Accoya is acetylated radiata pine: dimensionally stable, Class 1 durable and guaranteed for 50 years above ground. It accepts paint exceptionally well and does not cup or warp with moisture changes. It is the most reliable choice for front doors that receive direct weather exposure.
The traditional choice for external doors in period properties, particularly where hardwood is architecturally appropriate. Oak has a naturally long service life, develops an attractive patina when oiled, and is the material of choice for doors intended to be stained or oil-finished rather than painted.
A cost-effective option for sheltered or internal applications. Select grade kiln-dried redwood is stable and takes paint well, though it does not match Accoya or oak for durability in exposed conditions.

Many of AMB Joinery's door projects are in protected properties across London. Our experience includes:
Conservation areas. In most cases, replacing a door with a like-for-like timber equivalent is permitted development and does not require planning permission. However, many London boroughs — including Islington, Camden, Hackney, Kensington & Chelsea and Wandsworth — have Article 4 Directions that remove permitted development rights and require a planning application even for replacement doors. We identify the planning requirement during the survey.
Listed buildings. Any alteration to a door in a listed building requires Listed Building Consent, regardless of how minor. We are experienced in preparing the supporting documentation — drawings, material specifications and design statements — required by conservation officers. Work in listed buildings is always repair-first where structurally viable.
If your existing timber doors are structurally sound, restoration is usually the most practical and cost-effective solution. We carry out:
A well-restored Victorian or Edwardian front door will outperform a new composite door in both character and longevity if properly maintained.

Yes. We work from physical samples, drawings or reference photographs to produce a matching profile. For terrace properties where a single door needs to match others in the row, profile matching is standard practice.
Yes. All our external door designs can be specified with BS 3621 mortice deadlocks, multi-point locking systems and hinge bolts appropriate for insurance requirements.
Manufacturing lead time is typically 4–8 weeks from approved specification. Installation of a single door is usually completed in one day.
Either. Where the existing frame is in good condition and the correct dimensions, we can manufacture a new door leaf to suit it. Where the frame is also in poor condition or incorrect, we replace both.
